Darkhan Metallurgical Plant LLC is Mongolia’s pioneering and largest steel producer, established on the basis of technology for remelting scrap metal and producing rolled steel products. The company has 34 units and 1,465 employees and is considered one of the largest employers in the local area. It operates its own accredited mining and metallurgical laboratory that meets international and national ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards.

The company follows the principle of “occupational safety first” and applies relevant Mongolian occupational health and safety laws, rules and standards. It maintains quality control throughout raw material inspection, production processes, sales and storage to ensure safe products that meet customer requirements.

Steel plant

The steel plant has annual capacity to melt 121.7 thousand tons of scrap metal, produce 108.7 thousand tons of billets, and manufacture 100.0 thousand tons of rolled products. It is equipped with machinery from Japanese companies including Nissei and Mitsubishi.

In 2017, the company commissioned a forged steel grinding ball plant with annual capacity of 25,000 tons, using equipment from Germany and Italy, to expand its product range and meet domestic demand.

Tumurtolgoi mine

The Tumurtolgoi open-pit iron ore mine is located in Khongor soum of Darkhan-Uul province, 28 km from the metallurgical plant. The deposit has 25 million tons of iron ore reserves. The mine extracts 2 million tons of ore with 42–45% Fe content per year and processes it through a dry magnetic separation plant to produce 1.3 million tons of lump and fine concentrate with 55–58% Fe content.

Tumurtei iron ore mine

The Tumurtei open-pit iron ore mine is located in Khuder soum of Selenge province, 130 km from the plant. The deposit contains 229.3 million tons of iron ore reserves and is classified as a strategic deposit of Mongolia. Its eastern and western mining areas have combined annual capacity to mine 2 million tons of ore and produce 1.3 million tons of concentrate with 58–62% Fe content.
